How to Hit Golf Iron?

As a golfer, whether professional or as a leaner, it is your goal always to hit the golf iron perfectly. That’s the reason why you keep spending time training and sharpening your skills. Here are some professional tips that are designed to help you hit golf iron as professionals do.

Take it back low

Taking it back low is the first tip to hitting the golf iron well. If you will hit your long iron at an excellent rate, it is essential that you take the club back quickly while you are swinging.

One of the requirements of long iron is a sweeping motion compared to other types of iron, and the swinging must be very smooth. To achieve this, you need to go back slow and go a bit low for your first few feet; then, you should ensure that your club shaft is pointing down towards the target line. You should also ensure that your toes id halfway at the back. When you deliberately do these, it helps you have a smoother and slight swing that will help you hit longer irons.

Smash with Your Body

You can get the best contact and hit the right distance out of your iron, but this requires you to put your body fully and solidly behind the ball, which you efficiently finish the swing. When addressing the ball, ensure you tilt your shoulder slightly, and that your spine is angled away efficiently from the target.

You should also ensure that the placement of your left should is higher than that of the right shoulder. Your left foot should be flared out a bit. The importance of this is to help you make a perfect and powerful rotation when pulling your shot.

Before you proceed to rotate your hips on the downswing, you need to first shift them toward the target a few inches- this part should come into play before you complete swinging the club back.

Trap the Ball and Make A Divot

One of the most important things to do when trying to hit the best iron shot is to take a divot, and it is very essential. When you do this the right way, it becomes way easier to strike the ball well. This you can achieve by making your back-swing shallow, swing a little more around you than usual.

This will then set up a low angle to the ball, and a long, but thin divot. Another benefit of this is its effect on your hand. When you turn the knuckles of your hand, it helps you make the best impact.

This will show that you are compressing the ball well and that you are effectively trapping it between the turf and the clubface. The overall result is a divot on the forward side of the ball.

Ensure You Are Not Helping the Ball Up

One of the common mistakes made by golf players (professionals included) is trying too hard to help the ball move into the air. The result? A short fading shot that does not move far at all.

Fixing this is easy when hitting, ensure that everything is made to move forward with the right level of impact. This impact will be influenced by your weight, your arm, hands, and how you grip the end of the club.

Ensure you hit with the back of your left hand facing the target. As such, it will feel as if you are backhanding the ball when making the impact. When you do this, you will deliver the club in such a way that you will hit the correct loft, hit more greens, and your iron will move in the right direction.

Sweep into contact with Long Irons

When preparing to take a shot with longer irons, you should try and swing in a sweeping motion pattern. Sweeping your long iron will deliver a rich result, and help you hit the ball the right way.

If you will do this, you need to position the ball slightly at the forward of your center stance; you should also ensure that you have a shallow swinging arc; it should never be steep. It is best to start practicing this movement without the ball until you come in tune with the movement.

Then hit the turf at the forward of your center, which is at the bottom of your arc. Keep repeating this movement until it comes naturally. Remember, your goal is to sweep and not dig.

Take More Club than You Think

Another problem many golfers face when playing is having less club; such golfer does not always take sufficient club when it comes to distance. You can do this differently by taking an extra club, and ensure that you swing with less power and that the finish is quite short.

When you have enough clubs, you can alternate how you play (some short, some long). Another option is the Three-Quarter Swing; this helps you control the movement of your ball when hitting, and it also helps you manage the movement of your body too.

Make Full Backswing

If aren’t making full backswing on your iron shot, the chances are high that you will end up swinging the club sharply into the ball. Don’t rush to hit the ball, be patient, first turn to the top, and then turn through. If you get this right, if your movement is perfect, you will come to a position where you can make perfect strikes, and this will prevent thin hitting.

Try Setting up Closer to the Ball

If you will hit solid irons, setting up closer to the ball is essential. You also need an effective grip as this spells success on your hitting the iron. Do the following, take extra club than you normally do, grip down by an inch, stand very close to the ball as this will ensure that your shaft is vertical.
